Massacre at Valley Hill

Staff Writer

Three people are dead, and a man is in custody after a shooting Friday night at a residence in Carroll County.
Carroll County Sheriff Clint Walker identified the victims as Marlee Jones Barnhill, 27, Brooks Hooker Harrell, 39, and Jim Harrell, 44, all of Carroll County.
A man Walker identified as 30-year-old Michael Martin Barnhill, 30, is charged with three counts of homicide and two counts of attempted murder, according to Sheriff Walker
Barnhill, husband of Marlee Barnhill, is being held without bond at the Carroll-Montgomery Regional Correctional Facility.
Walker said the shooting happened at a home in the Valley Hill Community just west of Carrollton on Highway 82.
Walker walked through the details of Friday night:
Michael and Marlee Jones Barnhill were invited to the home of Jim and Brooks Harrell to celebrate Marlee’s 27th birthday, which was coming up Saturday, the sheriff said.
“Included in this celebration were Mauri Suggs and Amber Garrard, who are both friends of the couples,” Walker said. “The Harrells’ 10-year-old son was also present in the home. These were all good friends having a nice time together.”
Walker said Michael Barnhill, however, “became drunk and belligerent” during the course of the evening.
The others discouraged his drunkenness, and he became angry and combative, according to the sheriff. His wife was in possession of the keys to their vehicle to prevent him driving away in his drunken state, Walker said.
