Christmas in April officials are seeking applications for the event’s 25th year as they continue to bring stability to homes of those who need it most.
Christmas in April Treasurer Kim McRee said only a few applications have been submitted, and they need more as the deadline approaches. McRee said Christmas in April wants to have a number of applications by March 15, so the group can know where they stand.
“We know they’re out there,” McRee said. “We need more applications from qualified homeowners, particularly the elderly. They’re on a fixed income, and that’s who we’re focused on helping.”
This year’s day for renovations is set for April 13, where up to 10 or more homes will get a much needed sprucing up.
Christmas in April is an initiative supported by local churches and other people of good will that brings together volunteers to help repair homes.
The clients who receive help are chosen by a 13-member board representing churches, businesses and civic clubs throughout the city.
“It’s a privilege to offer this service to the community each year, and the value we add, and the good will we spread, goes beyond paint and porches and roofs,” said Christmas in April Treasurer Kim McRee.
McRee said professionals are needed like plumbers, electricians and construction workers, but anyone who can swing a hammer or pull a paint brush is more than welcome.
“No special skills are required,” said McRee, “just a willingness to help.”
Last year, Christmas in April volunteers made improvements to over a dozen houses, totalling $32,500 in renovations.
In order to be eligible, prospective clients must own their own home and complete an application process.
