Safe room nears completion

The new emergency safe room on Mondy Road is showing signs of life, as the enormous dome structure is only a month away from completion.
“I think it’s beautiful, and the fact that Grenada is getting a safe place to turn to in case of emergencies makes it even greater,” said City Manager Trey Baker.
The shell of the dome structure was completed last week, and Baker said the inside and the outer area, such as the parking site, and other additions are underway.
City officials have estimated that the safe room will be completed this spring. It lies in Ward Seven, which is Councilman Ronnie Merriman’s ward.
Last year, U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson’s office approved a $557,500 grant to the City of Grenada for an emergency safe room.
The project is a multi-purpose safe room with a total of 4,000 square feet. The address is 260 Mondy Road.
Under stipulations of the grant, the safe room could not be located near a highway, and it must be strictly-used for emergency purposes. The grant calls for the safe room to be built on city property.
In the past week, crews have worked inside the dome structure, which will be sealed tight during a natural disaster.
These types of rooms are designed to withstand winds of up to 200 mph.
“We have 40 acres that we’ve cleared off for it, and it lies in a good place,” Baker said. “I commend our city crews for what they’ve done out here.”
