The Grenada County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the shooting death of a local woman that happened in Elliott Saturday morning.
Grenada County Sheriff Alton Strider said the shooting happened just off U.S. 51 around five o’clock.
When deputies arrived at the scene, they found 50-year-old Benita Cox dead.
“This was just off the highway at what was once known as Collins Plaza,” Strider said. “There is a brick house back there and an apartment complex, and that’s where we found her.”
Investigator Josh Dale said no arrests have been made in the shooting, and they are trying to piece together exactly what happened.
“We have sent her to the State Crime Lab for an autopsy, but we do know that a .45 caliber handgun was used in the shooting,” Dale said. “She was shot once.”
Dale said the preliminary investigation shows that some type of altercation took place at one of the residences.
