Walter Barnes

Funeral services for Walter “Walt B” Barnes of Grenada are Saturday at 2 p.m. at Second New Hope M.B. Church.
Mr. Barnes, 68, died of natural causes at his home on Jan. 28, 2019.  He was born on May 2, 1950.  Mr. Barnes was a graduate of Mississippi Valley State University.
Mr. Barnes is survived by his wife Juanita Barnes of Grenada;  daughter Latoya Cristal of Grenada;  two sons, Arthur Williams of Chicago and Walter Bennett of Grenada; and brother Fred Barnes of Grenada.

William Oliver McMahan

Funeral services for William Oliver McMahan, 91, of Tupelo, were Wednesday at the Mortimer National Funeral Home Chapel in Grenada.
Burial was in the Gore Springs Cemetery.
William died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2019, at the Sanctuary Hospice Home in Tupelo.
He was born on July 2, 1927, in Grenada County and was the son of the late Perry Retus McMahan and Irma Harrison McMahan.
William was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member the First Baptist Church in Tupelo. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during World War II.
William was preceded in death by his parents, Perry and Irma McMahan; two sisters, Myrtle Lucille Martin and Claudine Sykes; and four brothers, Frances Carl “Dick” McMahan, Clifford E. McMahan, Russell McMahan and Durwood McMahan.
He is survived by his wife Irene McMahan of Tupelo; one son William Larry McMahan of Tupelo; two sisters, Ruth Banasiewicz of Nashville and Catherine Griffin of Grenada; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandchild.

Lera Shaw Tolbert

Funeral services for Lera (‘Lo,’ ‘Sweet’) Shaw Tolbert of Grenada are Saturday at noon at Burning Bush M. B. Church with burial in Haven Rest Cemetery.
Mrs. Tolbert, 96, died at her home on Jan. 22, 2019.  She was born on Nov. 23, 1922. Mrs. Tolbert was a retired custodian at Regions Bank and a member of the Grenada Chapter of the NAACP.  She enjoyed sewing, knitting and cooking.
Mrs. Tolbert is survived by three daughters, Delores Tolbert Willis and Rose Marie Tolbert Davis, both of Grenada, and Nancy Lee Tolbert Blackmon of Stone Mountain, Ga.; three sons, Angelo Cedric Tolbert and Anthony Shaw Tolbert, both of Grenada, and Donald Lavert Tolbert of Fayetteville, Ga.

Jena Bounds Watson

Jena Bounds Watson, 59, passed away at her home in Grenada on Jan. 14, 2019, after a brave battle with various health issues.  She was born Feb. 27, 1959, and raised in Houston, Miss., before moving to Grenada County.
Jena is survived by her children, Clint Blissard (Amanda) of Houston; Clara Grace Watts (Andrew) of Brandon, and Elliott Watson (Jessica) of Holcomb; grandchildren, Anna Claire Plunk, Mary Virginia Blissard, Ella Johnson, Kelsey Fowler, Kylon Fowler, Karson Fowler, Will Watson, Charley Watson and Able Blanchfield.
She was preceded in death by her infant daughter Mary Elizabeth Blissard and parents, Charlie and Mary Pounds. She was followed in death by her daughter Rebecca Blissard.
A memorial service honoring her life was held Jan. 19 at First Baptist of Houston.
