A Grenada woman was discovered dead in a Madison County Jail, sparking an investigation by state officials.
Lanekia Michelle Brown, 37, was awaiting trial for a Trafficking of a Controlled Substance charge after being arrested in November.
Brown’s family members told WJTV-TV in Jackson that she was three to four weeks pregnant, and they want answers concerning her death.
According to a WJTV report, a family member said a trooper with the Mississippi Highway Patrol told her that a nurse at the Madison County Detention Center was going to check on Brown, 37, after she complained of stomach pains, but by time the nurse arrived Brown was dead.
“Right now, it’s too early, and we don’t have any information to release,” said Madison County Coroner Alex Breeland.
Last month, Brown and Marcus Anthony Redrick of Texas were taken into custody after a traffic stop in Madison yielded 103 pounds of marijuana, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.
Madison County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Heath Hall confirmed Brown’s death and said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case and an autopsy was planned.
