In one week voters will head to the polls in what’s turned out to be a highly-contested statewide and local election.
Grenada County Circuit Clerk Michele Redditt-Garcia said that her office and the five county election commissioners are preparing for what’s expected to be a fairly-busy Election Tuesday on Nov. 6
Redditt-Garcia said over 500 absentee ballots have been cast and more are expected before Saturday’s deadline.
“This office will open Saturday from eight o’clock until noon, and that will be the last day to vote absentee,” Redditt-Garcia said. “In the last few days, absentee voting has really picked up, and that’s a good thing.”
This year’s election is headlined by the United States Senate race to fill the unexpired term for Sen. Thad Cochran, who retired in the spring. Cindy Hyde-Smith and Mike Espy, who are considered by many as the two favorites in the race, will appear on the ballot with Chris McDaniel and Toby Bartee.
Hyde-Smith is the former state commissioner of agriculture and was appointed by Gov. Phil Bryant to fill the senate vacancy.

District Four  school board race
Also included on the ballot is the much-anticipated District Four School Board race.
The District Four School Board lies within Supervisor Darrell Robinson’s district, and on Election Day precincts voting in that race are located at Taylor Hall and Friendship Baptist Church at Geeslin Corner.
In the school board race are Marjorie O. Hughes Thelma Hubbard and Cora “Coco” Kincaide-Cunningham.
