A credit card skimmer was found at a local gas station resulting in an investigation by the Grenada County Sheriff’s Department.
Grenada County Investigator Greg Conley said deputies were informed of the skimmer discovery at a gas station on Highway 7 North just near Interstate 55 exit 211.
Conley said deputies were informed of the skimmer by a gas station serviceman inspecting one of the gas pumps.
“When the serviceman detected it, he immediately called the sheriff’s department,” Conley said. “All over the state these things are popping up at gas stations.”
Conley said it’s been a while since they’ve dealt with card skimmers, but said summer travel may be the reason for this new warning.
“Because these criminals try and take advantage of the heavy traffic over the holidays,” Conley said.
Conley says most of your big stores are diligent about inspecting their machines daily.
For years, the Mississippi Attorney General’s Cyber Crime Unit has assisted local law enforcement agencies that are investigating skimming at gas stations.
Thieves have attached the small devices to fuel pumps that capture account information when a consumer swipes a card to pay for fuel. These small devices are almost impossible for consumers to notice. These devices are also sometimes used to steal account information at bank ATMs.
Attorney General Jim Hood has warned consumers to be alert for possible skimming and to diligently monitor account activity to protect against these high-tech thieves.
