Arson charge in Monday fire

Staff Writer

It was another busy weekend for Grenada firefighters, but this time a Grenada man is facing arson charges for an early Monday morning blaze.
According to the Grenada Police Department’s Incident Report, a 57-year-old man was arrested early Monday and charged with arson.
The arrest came in connection with a duplex fire in the 400 block of Barbee Street. The incident report identifies the man arrested as Bernard Reece.
Around 1:15 a.m., the Grenada Fire Department and police department were dispatched to the fire.
According to Fire Chief Ronnie Willis, firefighters reported heavy fire visible from the structure. Willis said the first crew pulled an attack line and began extinguishing the fire to protect nearby buildings. As more firefighters arrived, an additional attack line was deployed to extinguish the fire.
“Firefighters did an outstanding job controlling that fire, and they did not allow it to come through the roof,” Willis said. “They also controlled it and did not allow it to spread to the next apartment.”
According to the Grenada Police Department’s Incident Report, while firefighters battled the blaze, officers identified the occupant of the residence.
One of the captains of the police department’s C Shift said that the occupant of the apartment had confessed to starting the fire.
