The Kirk Academy football team began fall camp Monday in preparation for the upcoming 2018 season.
Coach Ken Chandler, who served as an assistant coach last season, has the task of helping end the school’s streak of nine years without a winning season.
“No question, these kids are tired of losing,” Chandler said. “They know that it is a process that’s going to take some time. We are excited about our senior group. They aren’t very vocal, but they lead by example.”
Chandler has two new assistant coaches this season. James Colbert comes to Kirk to take over the defensive unit. Jacob Carpenter, a former player of Chandler’s at Winona High School, will coach the special teams. Longtime assistant Stephen Crenshaw also returns.
Players will go through two different sets of practices each day. They will have a pair of practices each day. The first will run from 8-9:30 a.m. After a 30-minute break, players will go from 10:15-noon.
The Raiders will be in shorts and helmets for the first three days of practice. On July 26, players will move to shoulder pads and helmets. Teams can move to full gear July 30.
“We will have an install period followed by weight conditioning for the first two days,” Chandler said. “The install period will be when we put in our offensive and defensive packages. The time will also be used to do a lot of fundamental work.”
