Grace Nason Matthews
Grace Nason Matthews passed away on Monday, July 9, 2018, in Memphis, Tenn.
She was born in Grenada County, Miss., to the late R.D. Nason and Ada Bell Williams Nason. She was born on May 17, 1948. Grace gave her life to Christ at an early age as a member of New Tuscahoma African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Holcomb, Miss.
Always free-spirited and adventurous, she enlisted in the now defunct Women’s Army Corps (WAC) Unit of the United States Army. She served in the military from 1971 to 1974 and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. After an honorable discharge from the Army, Grace relocated to Memphis where she became an active member of Union Valley Baptist Church. Grace retired from the Veteran Administration Hospital (VA, Memphis) after more than 30years of service.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters: Emma Maggie Nason Holman and Ethel Lee Ford. She leaves to mourn her loss, but rejoice in all the wonderful shared memories, her sister Bernice Golliday, Memphis; brothers: Henry (Robbie) Nason and Junior (Sarah) Nason of Holcomb; her many nieces and nephews, her friend and caregiver: Carl Shelton; and a host of other friends and family.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 21 at noon at Union Valley Baptist Church, 1051 E. McLemore Avenue in Memphis. Public visitation will also be held at the church prior to the service from 10 a.m. to noon. The interment will be at New Park Cemetery, 4536 Horn Lake Road, Memphis.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to M.J. Edwards Funeral Home in Memphis.
Roland ‘Snow’ Thomas
Roland “Snow” Thomas, 86, of Brandon, died July 15, 2018, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland.
A Celebration of Life will be Tuesday, July 18, 1 p.m. at Ott and Lee Funeral Home, Brandon. A graveside service will follow at 4:30 p.m. at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Grenada.
He was born in Grenada on Oct. 8, 1931. to the late William Clarence Thomas and Ruby Carpenter Thomas.
Mr. Snow was a longtime resident of Clarksdale and a resident of Brandon for the past 13 years. He was a member of Crossgates Baptist Church, served in the U.S. Air Force, and worked as a Civil Engineer Technician in Soil Conservation.
He was preceded in death by his great-granddaughter Hope Elizabeth Stanford and sister Betty Sue Cox.
Survivors include his wife Eloise Thomas of Brandon; children, Linda Kittle of Cleveland, Gail Edwards of Flowood, and Jennifer Parham of Brandon; brother, William “Buddy” Thomas of Southaven; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren.
