Local all-star team wins East State Championship

In what may have been one of the oddest ways to win a state championship, the Grenada Recreation All-Stars took advantage of a pitching rule to win the East State Championship.
Grenada faced Newton County in the finals Saturday. It was the third game of the day for the team from South Mississippi.
After playing a half inning, Newton County threw a pitch when officials called timeout. It was ruled that the pitcher was ineligible having thrown over 20 pitches in the previous game. The penalty was a forfeit. Grenada found themselves as East State Champions.
With the win, Grenada was scheduled to play in the Overall State Tournament Monday at Senatobia. They opened play with a game against Indianola. The other semifinal contest features Oxford, who won two games Sunday against the Grenada Youth League, will face Mantachie.
The all stars are currently 14-0 over the summer and have their sights set on the Dizzy Dean World Series in Southaven.
