Every little boy dreams of playing pro football, pro baseball or pro basketball.
For Grenadian Genard Avery that dream became a reality when the Cleveland Browns selected the GHS and University of Memphis standout in the fifth round of the NFL draft held recently.
“I’m extremely blessed,” Avery said. “All I wanted was an opportunity. When I get with an organization and in a system, I will prove myself.”
The best opportunity for Avery to get drafted was to get an invite to the NFL Combine held each year in in Indianapolis. It was a nervous time for Avery.
“During the season, a lot of people were getting their invites to the combine early,” Avery said. “I got my invite two weeks before the end of the season. I was pumped up and excited to get the chance. Two of my teammates, Riley Ferguson and Anthony Miller, got their invite to the combine, but our focus was on finishing the season strong.”
It was a whirlwind time for Avery. He was named to the All-American Athletic Conference team.
