Next week the Boys and Girls Club of Grenada will host their annual gala, its biggest benefit, and Grenada’s recent NFL draft pick is one of the guest speakers.
The Boys and Girls Gala is scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 at the Mattox Event Center on Highway 51 South. Boys and Girls Club officials have invited Genard Avery, Shareef White and Tyrin Jones, all 2014 graduates of Grenada High School.
Tickets for the event are $50.
“The headline for this year’s gala is ‘Grenada’s Finest,’” said Mike Nabors of the Boys and Girls Club board of directors. “Seeing and hearing from these three young men, who were all once involved with the club, is very important. We’re highlighting the productive citizens that they’ve become.”
Avery made national news last week when he was a fifth round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League. He played the past four seasons at the University of Memphis, as did White. White recorded over 120 tackles in his four years at Memphis.
Jones graduated from the University of Arkansas-Monticello and during his senior year averaged close to 15 points a game for the Division 1 Weevils, the teams nickname.
“All of these men came through the Boys and Girls Club of Grenada,” Nabors said. “Genard was a high draft pick, Shareef can very well make an NFL team and Tyrin will definitely play professionally in Europe. I like to look at this as a way of them giving back.”
Board member Judy DeHart explains that the gala will be a special event and hopes for a room full.
“We need a lot of people at this event, and we’re hoping for a big turnout,” DeHart said. “More importantly, we’re showcasing three men that have all excelled and have received a college education.”
