Guilty plea in toddler’s death

Staff Writer

A Grenada man has pleaded guilty to charges related to the death of a three-year-old boy on Christmas Eve 2014.

Marqueze Collins, who had been charged with first degree murder, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder in the death of  A’marion Bounds. He entered the plea Monday afternoon in Grenada County Circuit Court.

Collins was sentenced to 33 years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections. The district attorney’s office recommended that Collins serve 28 years and spend five years on supervised probation.

Collins, 30, has been described by police as the boyfriend of Cortina Ewing, the toddler’s mother. Ewing entered a plea of guilty last year to second degree murder, but she has not been sentenced.

On the night of Christmas Eve 2014, police learned of an unresponsive child on Widow Road in Tie Plant.

Court records reveal that A’marion Bounds was transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

According to court records, detectives with the Grenada Police Department suspected abuse when they discovered burns and bruises on the child.

Authorities have said the youngster died of blunt force trauma.
