Hospital disputes failing safety record

Staff Writer

Officials at the University of Mississippi Medical Center Grenada are guaranteeing the public that patient safety at the there is not that of “F” quality,  and that the hospital is a place of safe quality care.

UMMC Grenada was rated at the bottom of a safety report by the Leap Frog Group, a non-profit organization that collects and reports hospital performances throughout the nation.

Published earlier this week, the survey group shows UMMC Grenada went from C to an F in the past six months, but hospital officials aren’t buying that score. There are indications the source material for the report is as much as four years old.

“Nothing is more important to the entire staff at UMMC Grenada than providing our patients and their families the safest and highest quality care possible,” said CEO Don Hutson.

Hutson said that patient safety is one of the foundational elements of success and receives constant focus.

The hospital’s score is made up of 27 measurements for factors that affect patient safety, like hand hygiene, staff responsiveness, infections, foreign objects found after surgery and other medical errors.

Leapfrog spokesman Erica Mobley said this week that the hospital had many “red flags,” such as nurse communication and discharge information.
Mobley also told the GrenadaStar that she has never visited the UMMC Grenada.

She said data sources from Medicare provided by all hospitals and information from the American Hospital Association is used to determine the grading process.
