A Grenada man was sentenced to the death penalty after his conviction of a 2000 murder and up to 17 counts of rape in California.

Kern County District Attorney Felicia Nagle identified the man as Michael Charles Brown, who is currently on death row for the murder of a Bakersfield mother of four.

According to Nagle, Brown also received several life terms in prison for a series of rapes she said he committed between 2007 and 2008.

Nagle said Brown sexually assaulted four prostitutes, two of whom positively identified him as their attacker from a selection of six photographs.

Nagle said the women told investigators Brown drove them in a car to secluded locations and forced them to perform sex acts.
