Weathers: city did not seek tourism funds

Staff Writer

City Manager Charles “Jo Jo” Weathers never officially asked  for any money, and the Grenada City council has not officially voted to ask for money from the Tourism Commission, according to Weathers.
The GrenadaStar reported last month on a meeting of the tourism commission in which a discussion arose about granting $45,000 to the city. According to commission members, the money was to be used to pay half the cost of drafting architectural plans for a proposed multi-purpose center.
The commission discussed the $45,000 as part of approving its finances for the month of May.
Commission President Steve Robinson reminded members that their predecessors on the board approved the measure when Weathers presented them with the idea more than a year ago.
Tourism Executive Director Samantha Hilmus said the item had been on the budget for a year.
Tourism Commission member Jan Walton strenuously objected to the payment, saying she believed it was illegal. She suggested the board consult with the state auditor and seek legal counsel.
