A Grenada man was honored Thursday for a lifetime of philanthropic work.
Zack L. Gibson Jr., is the 41st inductee into the Book of Golden Deeds, an honor bestowed by the Exchange Club of Grenada.
“I’m deeply honored to receive this award, and I want to thank the Exchange Club and all the good people of Grenada for making this possible,” said Gibson, 91. “I was always told that the best speech is one where the beginning and the end are close together,” Gibson said, laughing, then promptly took his seat.
The Book of Golden Deeds recognizes the good work of heroes and heroines of everyday life.
Lifetime of service
Originally from Mendenhall, Gibson attended what would become Mississippi State University and later joined the Navy.
His philanthropic endeavors included serving as a deacon as well as a Sunday school teacher in the Baptist church and assisting on mission trips to Honduras.
Gibson also coached youth baseball. At community events he often dressed as a clown, making balloon animals for the delight of children, and worked for the Jackson Zoo, taking animals for demonstrations to area schools.
