Railroad bill passes Senate

Staff Report

Representatives from seven northern Mississippi counties, including Grenada, have won the state legislature’s help in their effort to buy and reopen a length of railroad from Grenada to Canton.
The bill, enabling a bond for the purchase of the line, passed the Mississippi Senate Monday afternoon.
Officials from Grenada, Montgomery, Carroll, Holmes, Yalobusha, Panola and Tate counties joined in an alliance to allow purchase of the Grenada Railway LLC, which covers 187 miles from Southaven to Canton. The southern stretch has been closed since 2011.
The bill now must be signed by Gov. Phil Bryant.
