CLINTON – When Amy Carroll Hudspeth played at Kirk Academy and Delta State, she was always a player who played until the final horn sounded no matter the score.
Her Kirk Academy basketball team has developed that reputation. It was never more evident than in Tuesday’s opening round game in the Academy Overall Tournament at A.E. Wood Coliseum on the campus of Mississippi College.
Kirk faced Class AAA third place Jackson Academy in the opener. The Raiderettes faced a JA team that had a starting five that was bigger than the smaller Kirk team.
Jackson Academy built a 15-point lead only to see Kirk rally to cut it to six points at halftime. In the second half, the Raiderettes fell behind by 13 points, but rallied to tie the game with just over 6½ minutes left. In the end, JA had too much firepower winning a 58-49 decision.
