City hires new garbage service

Staff Writer

Waste Pro has won the contract for garbage pickup in the city and county.
The company will charge $9.95 per can to collect Grenada’s garbage.
Six city council members voted in favor of accepting the low bid from Waste Pro at their Monday meeting, with Ward Five Councilman the Rev. Timothy Chism casting the lone dissenting vote.
Chism could not immediately be reached for comment as to why he voted against the bid.
The next closest bidder was Waste Management, at $13.45 per can.
Waste Pro recently purchased Waste Connections, with whom Grenada had a contract. That’s why Grenada residents have seen trucks with the Waste Pro logo around town for the past couple of months. The city handles the contract but Waste Pro collects garbage in both the city and county.
Grenada first hired Waste Connections for a three-year contract in 2007, then renewed the contract in 2010.
Johnson said that he’d heard some minor grumbling from residents in his district about Waste Pro’s service.
