A Winona man was seriously injured Thursday and airlifted to Tupelo in an accident at Hankins Lumber Company, according to county officials.
Grenada Deputy Sheriff Steve Howell said Friday that Anthony Simpson, age unknown, was caught in a machine called an unscrambler, which separates lumber, and broke both his legs.
Simpson was awake and alert when emergency personnel arrived on the scene, shortly before 7 p.m., Howell said.
MedStat emergency helicopter service out of Winona landed at Morgan’s Store, on the corner of Hwy. 51 South and Nat G. Troutt Road, and transported Simpson to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, according to Howell.
No further information about Simpson’s condition was available as of Friday evening.
Members of the Elliott Volunteer Fire Department were among the first on the scene and helped pull Simpson from the machinery, sources said.
