One person died and two more were transported to the University Medical Center in Jackson when a Chevy Tahoe ran off Interstate 55 and crashed at the Carrollton Road overpass Friday, officials said.
Thomas Williams, age unknown, of Oakland, Tenn., died in the accident, that happened just before 2 p.m.
According to Trooper Tony Dunn with the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Williams was pronounced dead on the scene by Grenada County Coroner Eddie Robinson.
Dunn said Monday that Williams was the father Dan Williams, a nose-tackle for the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals, Dan Williams.
Williams and his companions were reportedly traveling to the game in New Orleans when the accident happened.
According to Lt. Carnell Farmer with the Grenada Police Department, the Tahoe was traveling southbound on I-55 when it veered off the road. It descended the hill, jumped the guard rail and ended up facing northward at the spot where Carrollton Road passes under the interstate.
According to Dunn, the vehicle was driven by 56-year-old Karen Williams, also of Oakland, Tenn. As she attempted to pass a vehicle, her car collided with the guard rail, sending the vehicle over the guard rail and down the embankment.
Williams, along with a passenger Kristina Fluckner, age unknown, were transported to University Medical Center by Medstat EMS with possible life threatening injuries.
