Morris “Magic Slim” Holt
Funeral services for Morris “Magic Slim” Holt, 75, of Lincoln, formerly of Grenada, are at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 2, at Horizons Community Church in Lincoln, Neb. A musical memorial tribute is currently being planned in Chicago. The Zoo Bar in Lincoln is also planning a musical tribute. Both tributes will be announced when details are finalized.
Magic Slim died Feb. 21, 2013. He will be missed by his family, friends and blues fans all over the world. The family wishes to thank everyone for their kind words and prayers.
The Mississippi Blues Commission unveiled the 134th marker on the Mississippi Blues Trail in a 2011 ceremony honoring Magic Slim’s internationally-famous guitar playing.
He was preceded in death by his father, Nick Holt; and mother, Pinkey Holt Taylor; and three brothers, Douglas Holt, Frank Holt, and Nick Holt Jr.
Magic Slim is survived by his wife, Ann Holt of Lincoln; four sons, Sean Holt of Lincoln, Jerry Jones, Micheal Jones, and Billy Wayne Jones, all of Grenada; a daughter, Janice Jones of Fayette, S.C.; a sister, Lucinda Holt Brown of Grenada; two brothers, Charles Holt of Peduka, Ky., and James Holt of Columbus, Ohio.
Earlene C. Jernigan
Funeral services for Earlene Covington Jernigan, 97, of Greenwood, formerly of Grenada, are at 2 p.m. Friday, March 1, at Jones Chapel #2 M.B. Church in Greenwood. Burial will follow in Ebenezer Cemetery in Carroll County.
Visitation is Thursday from 1 to 6 p.m. at Clark-Williams Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jernigan died Feb. 22, 2013, at her home.
She was born on Oct. 5, 1915. Mrs. Jernigan was a salesperson and a member of Jones Chapel #2 M.B. Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Annie of Greenwood and Maude Crowder of Memphis; and two sons, Roscoe Covington Sr. of Coweta, Okla., and Willie Covington of Memphis.

Joe Lewis Lamon
Funeral services for Joe Lewis Lamon, native of Grenada, were recently held in Los Angeles.
Mr. Lamon died Feb. 5, 2013.
He moved to Los Angeles as a teenager.
Mr. Lamon was preceded in death by his mother, Sallie Lee Holmes; his grandparents, Pinkney Bowdry Sr. and Hallie Bowdry, and Hattie L. Williams; an aunt, Annie Bell Mead; and a sister, Mary Lee.
Survivors include three sisters, Hilda Townesand of Grenada, and Mildred Walker and Jessie Bouth, both of Los Angeles; two brothers, Admise Holmes and the Rev. Casey Holmes Jr. of Atlanta; a son, three grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and of cousins.
Sarah Allbritton Land
Graveside services for Sarah Allbritton Land, 93, of Winona, were at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, at Oakwood Cemetery in Winona.
Mrs. Land died Feb. 23, 2013, at Tyler Holmes Memorial Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William Samuel and Alice Blackwood Allbritton; and her husband, Travis E. Land.
Survivors include her daughter, Rebecca Land Golding of Winona.
Lee Funeral Home of Winona was in charge.
Joyce Staten, 60, of Grenada died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at her residence. She was born on Nov. 13, 1952, in Grenada to A. E. Vance and Ruth Thomas Vance. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Grenada and was a retired mail carrier.
Visitation will be Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013, at Friendship Baptist Church from 1-3 p.m. Funeral services will follow at Friendship Baptist Church at 3 p.m. with Bro. Bob Self officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Jeff Staten; her parents, A. E. and Ruth Vance; two sons, Dale Staten and Shane Staten; two daughters, Cindy Kinard and Jeffery Staten; one brother, Bobby Vance, all of Grenada; and one sister, Lisa Hughes of Coffeeville. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Dylan Staten, Ethan Staten, Alex Kelly, Hunter Staten, Justin Kinard, Haley Kinard, Leah Kinard, and Mia Claire Warren, all of Grenada.
She was preceded in death by one brother, David Vance.
