Pastor cites robbery try in shooting

Staff Writer

A Grenada pastor was to be released from the hospital Wednesday after being shot  in what he said was an attempted robbery.
According to Grenada police, the Rev. Perry L. Montgomery, 79, was shot four times with a small caliber handgun Monday around 3:30 p.m in his home on Harvey St.
Montgomery is pastor of First New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Grenada and owner of Montgomery Mortuary Ministries in Houston.
Montgomery told the GrenadaStar that his assailant tried unsuccessfully to rob him and shot him in the process. He was hit in the shoulder and in the arm.
Montgomery didn’t call 911 or go to Grenada Lake Medical as a matter of convenience, he said. He had a friend drive him to the North Mississippi Medical Center branch in Eupora, because that’s where his regular physician is, and he didn’t want to have to fill out a lot of paperwork, he said.
A neighbor of Montgomery’s filed an aggravated assault report with GPD related to the incident, police records show.
Interim Chief Russell Carver said Tuesday that the department was waiting on Montgomery to recover and to give them more information to assist in the investigation.
