Cleo H. Burke

Cleo Harris Burke, 88, of Grenada, died Tuesday at Beverly Health Care Center in Grenada.

Mrs. Burke was a homemaker. She was a member of Tillatoba Baptist Church.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Tillatoba Baptist Church with Bros. Harvey Vance and J.C. Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Tillatoba.

Mrs. Burke is survived by a son, Jimmy Burke of Clinton; a sister, Rebecca Raines of Memphis, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Susan Bell, Sherry Hyde, both of Caledonia, Cindy Smith of Water Valley, David Traywick of Elrod, Ala., Sheila Ayers of Grenada and Jim Burke of Clinton; and seven grandchildren.

National Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Samuel R. Clay

Samuel ‘Sam’ R. Clay, 84, of Grenada, a native of Iuka, died Saturday at Grenada Lake Medical Center.

Mr. Clay was a carpenter. He was a member of Second New Hope Church.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Second New Hope Church with the Rev. K.C. Body officiating. Burial will be in Haven Rest Cemetery.

Mr. Clay was preceded in death by a son, Samuel R. Clay Jr.; his parents, Will and Eva Clay; two brothers; and five sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Essie Mae Clay of Grenada; a son, Michael Clay of Grenada; five daughters, Delores Taylor of Jackson, Eva Johnson, Jessica Burt, Essie Townes and Cora Collins, all of Grenada; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and a host of nephews and nieces.

Juawice G. Hamberlin

WINONA – Juawice Gordon Hamberlin, 80, died Tuesday at Whispering Pines Hospice Ministry in Ridgeland.

Mrs. Hamberlin was a retired clerk for Mormans Drug Store in Winona. She was a member of North Winona Baptist Church.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Oliver Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Hamberlin is survived by a son, Bill Gordon of Canton; a brother, Clyde Laster of Greenwood; a sister, Dorothy Raper of Duck Hill; five grandchildren, Nikki Gordon, Stephanie Gordon, Christy Ferrell, Joel Gordon and John Gordon; and a great-grandson, Reed Gordon.

Elizabeth A. Harrison

CHARLESTON – Elizabeth Ann Blackmon Harrison, 75, of Tippo, died Tuesday at The Med in Memphis, Tenn.

Mrs. Harrison was a retired bank clerk.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Tippo Methodist Church. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. at Lakewood Cemetery in Jackson.

Mrs. Harrison is survived by her husband, Luther A. Harrison of Tippo; two sons, Luther ‘Coco’ Harrison of Vernon, Ala. and David Harrison of Tippo; and five grandchildren.

Neta E. Hessler

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. – Neta Earleen Harbin Hessler, 81, of El Cajon, Calif., formerly of Grenada, a native of Houston, died Sunday at Gross Mount Hospital in California.

Mrs. Hessler was a homemaker and a former employee of Monte Cristo. She was also a Baptist.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Featheringill Helix View Chapel. Burial will be in El Cajon Cemetery.

Mrs. Hessler is survived by her husband, Roy H. Hessler of El Cajon, Calif.; a daughter, Sue Gosser of Temecula, Calif.; five grandchildren, Rhonda Bailey, Kenneth Bailey, Judy Gosser, Brian Gosser and Joe Gosser; five great-grandchildren; and three sisters-in-law, Marie Harbin of Grenada, Lucy Harbin and Mae Harbin, both of New Jersey.

Joseph W. Schoolfield

Joseph ‘Joe’ Wilson Schoolfield Jr., 70, of Grenada, died Tuesday at Grenada Lake Medical Center.

Mr. Schoolfield was a retired employee of Heatcraft, Inc. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church and United States Air Force.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at National Funeral Home Chapel with Bros. Frank Samples and John Hood officiating. Burial will be in Calhoun City Cemetery in Calhoun City.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Schoolfield is survived by his wife, Sue Schoolfield of Grenada; two stepsons, Lee Counts and Jeff Counts, both of Grenada; a stepdaughter, Debra Ann Pryor of Gore Springs; a sister, Naomi Rose Owensby of Atlanta, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

Annie B. Smith

CALHOUN CITY – Annie Bernice Smith, 86, of Pittsboro, died Monday at her residence.

Mrs. Smith was a retired supervisor for Buchman Laboratories. She was a member of Pittsboro Methodist Church.

The funeral was at 11 a.m. today at Pryor Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Aycock officiating. Burial was in Pittsboro Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel H. Smith and Pauline Ellard Smith; and a sister Christine Smith Faust.

She is survived by a brother, Sam E. Smith of Louisville; a sister, Martha Smith Womble of Clearwater, Fla.; several nephews and nieces.

Dennis E. Smith

BATESVILLE – Dennis E. Smith, 49, of Sardis, died Monday at South Panola Community Hospital in Batesville.

Mr. Smith was a mechanic for Crown, Cork & Seal in Batesville. He was a member of Cold Springs Methodist Church.

The funeral was at 11 a.m. today at Wells Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Lee Hudson officiating. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Diane L. Smith of Sardis; two sons, Dennis E. Smith Jr. of Kansas City, Kan. and Brandon L. Smith o Sardis; five brothers, Billy R. Smith of Crowder, Danny W. Smith of Batesville, Gary L. Smith of Coldwater, Ronnie P. Smith and Tony L Smith, both of Sardis; a sister, Janet S. Ware of Sardis; and his step-mother, Jessie H. Smith of Sardis.

Audrey N. Sutherland

CALHOUN CITY – Audrey Neil Sutherland, 73, of Starkville, died Tuesday at Oktibbeha County Hospital.

Ms Sutherland was a member of New Liberty Baptist Church.

The funeral was at 3 p.m. today at Pryor Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jim Vance of officiating. Burial was in New Liberty Cemetery.

Ms Sutherland was preceded in death by her parents, John Sutherland and Jimmie Lee Sutherland; and three brothers, Jimmy R. Sutherland, Lee Sutherland and Charles Sutherland.

She is survived by a brother, Randle Sutherland of Bruce; three sisters, Louise S. Carroll of Grenada, Elenor McMellian of New Albany and Johnnie Wheeler of Houston; and several nephews and nieces.
