Sammie L. Jefferson
BATESVILLE – Sammie Lee Jefferson, 81, died Monday at Grenada Lake Medical Center.
Mr. Jefferson was a construction worker for O’Neil Construction Co. He was a member of Green Gosha Missionary Baptist Church in Coffeeville.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Cotton Plant Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday at the mortuary.
Mr. Jefferson is survived by his wife, Lola Middleton Jefferson of Batesville; three sons, Sammie L. Jefferson Jr., Jessie Jefferson, both of Batesville and Wesley Jefferson of Como; four daughters, Leona Jefferson, Leanner Wright, Lenora Hamilton, all of Batesville and Cora D. James of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Herman Jefferson of Water Valley; three sisters, Cordia M. Tallifero, Willie M. Turner, both of Water Valley and Hattie Heard of Memphis, Tenn.; 19 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Cooley’s Mortuary, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
James D. Powell
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Dr. James David Powell, 80, formerly of Grenada, a native of Meridian, died Tuesday at DCH Regional Medical Center.
Dr. Powell taught science and served as high school principal in Grenada from 1947 to 1956. He was a member of Forest Lake United Methodist Church, Golden K Kiwanis Club, and was a former member and advisor for Phi Delta Kappa at the University of Alabama.
Dr. Powell was a graduate of Meridian High School and junior college. He received his bachelor of science degree from Millsaps College in Jackson, and his master of arts and doctor of education from the University of Alabama.
The funeral was at 10 a.m. today at Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. David Carboni and April Ponder-Twardy and Dr. Felix Sutphin officiating. Burial was in Tuscaloosa Memorial Park.
Dr. Powell is survived by his wife, Elizabeth L. “Lib” Powell of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; three sons, Milton Powell of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Richard Powell of Birmingham, Ala. and Robert Powell; five grandchildren, Hilen Powell, Harrison Powell, both of Tuscaloosa, Ala., David Powell, Kate Powell and Brian Powell, all of Birmingham, Ala.
