Kathryn G. Brevard

Kathryn Greene Brevard, age 86, died Thursday, July 6 at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson.

Mrs. Brevard was a retired school teacher after 29 years in the Grenada school system, she was a graduate of Baldwyn High School, a 1936 graduate of Mississippi State College for Women, and she was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Grenada.

Funeral services were today at 11 a.m. at Garner-Harper Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom McCallester and the Rev. Milton Boyd officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery.

Mrs. Brevard was preceded in death by her husband Sidney A. Brevard and her brother, Walter Greene. She is survived by two sons, Leon H. Brevard of Jackson, and Tim G. Brevard of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Louise G. Phillips of Baldwyn, Sarah G. Abernathy of Kingston, Tenn. and a brother, James H. Greene of Rockdale, Texas.

Garner-Harper Funeral Home of Grenada is in charge of arrangements.

Carl Skelton, Sr.

GREENWOOD – Carl Skelton, Sr., age 73, died Friday, July 7 at his residence in Greenwood.

Mr. Skelton was a retired independent truck driver. He was born in Carroll County and resided there most of his life. He was a former resident of Bakersfield, Calif. and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Bakersfield. He was a U.S. Navy Seaman in WWII serving on the USS Saratoga, he also served in the U.S. Army AirBorne Paratroopers after the war. He was also a member of the VFW.

Skelton is survived by his wife Livie Rose Barone Skelton of Greenwood; one son, Carl “Buddy” Skelton, Jr. of Greenwood; three daughters, Cheryl Prince and Rose Marie Gammill of Greenwood, and Shelly Post of Bakersfield, Calif.; his mother, Ruby Lee Skelton of Greenwood; five brothers, Robert Skelton of Teoc, William L. Skelton of Greenwood, Jerry Skelton of Indianapolis, Indiana, Ernie Skelton of Grenada, and Myron Skelton of McCall Creek, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Williams & Lord Funeral Home of Greenwood is in charge of arrangements.

Troy Walker

Troy Walker, 83, of Grenada died Sunday, July 9 at Methodist Central Hospital in Memphis.

Mr. Walker was a member of First Baptist Church in Grenada.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 11 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of National Funeral Home. Burial will be in Moorehead Cemetery in Moorehead.

Visitation will be held tonight from 6-8 p.m.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca “Becky” Walker, two daughters, Carolyn Walker of Greenville; Ivy Rogers of Bruce; two grandchildren, Scott Walker and Donna Walker.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Antha Walker and Anna Walker; and a grandson, Mark Walker.

National Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Bernice Cole

SPRINGFIELD, IL – Bernice Cole died Tuesday, July 11 at St. John’s Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. National Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mabel Compere Hardin

CALHOUN CITY – Mabel Compere Hardin, age 95, died Sunday, July 9 at Trace Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Hardin was a homemaker and a member of Calhoun City First Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher. She was also a former schoolteacher in Marks and Calhoun City.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 11 at 2 p.m. at Pryor Funeral Home Chapel with Rev Paul Smith and Rev. Jim Vance officiating. Burial will be in Calhoun City Cemetery.

Mrs. Hardin was preceded in death by her husband – Charles M. “Charlie” Hardin and her parents – Rev. Ebenezer Compere and Nettie Shepherd Compere. She is survived by one daughter – Nita Claire Dyre of Houston; three sons – Charles C. Hardin, John Mike Hardin and James C. Hardin all of Calhoun City; two brothers – Brodus Compere of Madison and Sercy Compere of Brandon; 14 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Andy Hardin, Johnny Hardin, Kelly Hardin, Tony Hardin, Ed Dyre, Carey Hardin and Paul Hardin.

Pryor Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
