A majority of a quorum of the Grenada City Council voted in a special meeting Monday night to increase the salary of Interim City Manager Charles “Jo Jo” Weathers by $10,000.
After an opening prayer and recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, the council, with only five of the seven members present, quickly moved into executive session to discuss the personnel matter.
According to Mayor Billy Collins, Weathers asked that his pay be raised from $80,000 per year to the amount the city manager previously made prior to his interim hire -- $90,000.
Weathers took over as interim in May after the previous city manager was asked to resign after just one month.
“My feeling is that the salary should have stayed the same, given that 200 other city employees haven’t gotten a raise in seven years,” said Collins.
The vote was four to one in favor of granting Weathers’s pay raise, according to Collins. Councilmen Lewis Johnson, Fredrick Wilson, Larry Vance and Ron Merriman voted in favor of the raise. Councilman Warren Cox voted against it. Councilmen Tim Chism and Ernest Hargove were absent.
