Hometown comfort and international flare
Artists Ellen Langford and Heather Ryan discuss displaying of Langford's painting, "Paul's of Pearl," that will be hung at the new art exhibit.
Hometown comfort and international flare will spice up the atmosphere as First Street Gallery exhibits pieces by Mississippi artists Ellen Langford of Jackson and Heather M. Ryan of Grenada.

Langford will have paintings displayed that reflect life in Pearl, Vicksburg, Canton, and Flora. "Mississippi is a really unique place with a lot of history," she said.

Langford says that she tries to depict the things that symbolize what the South really is. "Things that they are trying to leave behind in the New South, we're trying to keep," she explained. She finds these symbols of the South at Mississippi's barber shops, chicken pens, parks, and local storefronts, and has painted about half of her collection from real life.

Local artist Heather Ryan will also be displaying at the gallery this weekend. Ryan, who had a long stay in London, England, will display pictures from Europe including shots of the Eiffel Tower and sailboats floated in the Tuilieres garden Paris.

Ryan says she has been doing photography off and on since she was about 15 when her parents bought her the Minolta camera that she still uses now. Ryan teaches classes in photography to the community at the Art Center across from the First Street Gallery.

The gallery will host an opening reception for the exhibit Saturday, July 13 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. With live music and refreshments. Admission will be free.
