Friends and relatives of Charles Smith talk with reporter Galen Holley (center) at the house where Smith was found dead.

Staff Report

A young Grenada man is dead from a gunshot wound, and unconfirmed reports say it’s a suicide.
According to Det. Lt. George Douglas, a man he identified Wednesday as Charles Smith, 28, was pronounced dead by officials from the Grenada County Coroner’s office in a house at 64 Middle Road between 11 a.m. and noon.
Grenada police initially responded to a report of shots fired, Douglas said, and found Smith when they arrived.
Smith suffered at least one gunshot wound, Douglas said. He would not speculate Wednesday if the wound was self-inflicted.
Douglas did not return numerous phone calls Thursday, and personnel at the police department said he was unavailable.
Interim Police Chief Russell Carver was away all week at a law enforcement convention in South Carolina, but he told the GrenadaStar Thursday that the shooting appeared to be a suicide, but it was being handled like a homicide.
Events on the scene Wednesday suggested otherwise.
