Interim City Manager Charles “JoJo” Weathers will begin interviewing candidates for the position of chief of police on Thursday.
Last week Weathers shared his thoughts about what kind of person he’d like to see in the position.
The most obvious trait the candidate should have is a desire to make Grenada better, said Weathers. He’s looking for someone who can establish and maintain good, open communication with police officers and with the community at-large, he said.
According to Weathers, the ideal candidate would be someone knowledgeable about the challenging and complex inner-workings of law enforcement and city governance, someone who can help him secure grants, come up with fresh ideas and promote community involvement in creating safer neighborhoods.
Weathers expressed concern over the state of morale in the police department, citing the fact that city employees haven’t received a pay raise in six years. The successful candidate for police chief, Weathers said, will find a way to bolster morale.
The person who survives the gauntlet of interviews and scrutinies, Weathers said, will be “good, aggressive and energetic. “Someone who can get things done,” said Weathers, “and make this a safer community.”
