Naysayers
6/22/2012
You Might Be One ...
An Editorial

City politicians have are apparently taken to labeling those who disagree with them as “naysayers.”
This led us to give some thought as to who these
terrible naysayers might be.
(The following is published with full apologies to Jeff Foxworthy.)

  • You might be a naysayer if you can think of no possible reason not to have the state auditor verify city procedures.
  • You might be a naysayer if you think the city council should spend less money than it takes from the people.
  • You might be a naysayer if you think the city council spends too much money on trips.
  • You might be a naysayer if you think the city council should not spend money it doesn’t have.
  • You might be a naysayer if you think the city council should stop spending earmarked money to cover everyday city expenses.
  • You might be a naysayer if you think the city is bankrupt.
  • You might be a naysayer if you want to ask the mayor or a member of the city council where they spend your money.
  • You might be a naysayer is you think the city council should not spend 20 year bond money to resurface roads that will need resurfacing before the bond obligations are paid out.
  • You might be a naysayer if if you don’t understand why the city council spent a couple of   million dollars on a senior citizens’ center and still doesn’t know how much it will cost to operate it each year.
  • You might be a naysayer if you wonder why the senior citizens’ center has so many big flat-screen   televisions.
  • You might be a naysayer if you think the city council was unwise to propose a $10 million (plus) soccer complex to be built on some of north Mississippi’s most valuable industrial land, when suitable land was available elsewhere at no cost.
  • You might be a naysayer if you question the wisdom of a building $10 million soccer complex, no matter where the location.
  • You might be a naysayer if you think city manager roulette is a poor way to operate a city.
  • You might be a naysayer if you worry that the city council’s “going paperless” could mean it will be harder to track council actions.
  • You might be a naysayer if think city government should be open and not behind closed doors.
  • You might be a naysayer of you think the city spends too much money on fancy cars and 4WD trucks.
  • You may be a naysayer if you think it is wrong to seek a grant, and then to look for a project to fit it.
  • You may be a naysayer if think it is a bad idea to get a grant to build something that costs taxpayers lots of money for future operation.
  • You may be naysayer if you think Grenada should be a better town today than it was 20 years ago.
