The deadline to qualify for the Grenada School District Post Three Trustee Election is Friday.
As of Friday morning, incumbent Arlene Conley was the only qualifier.
The District Three school board member holds a term of five years.
Conley was appointed by the Grenada County Board of Supervisors to finish the unexpired term of her late husband, Larry, in April 2007. She was elected to her first full term in March 2008.
The election for district three is set for Saturday, March 3. The District Three supervisor is Columbus Hankins.
Grenada County Circuit Clerk Linda Barnette said anyone seeking election to the Board of Trustees must be a qualified elector and a bona fide resident of the district that he or she would represent.
“Potential candidates should file with the circuit clerk’s office a petition signed by at least 25 qualified electors in the supervisor’s district that the trustee will be representing,” Barnette said.
According to Barnette, the petition must contain an affidavit certifying that all signatures on the petition are qualified electors that are residents of the district the candidate is seeking to represent.
The petition and accompanying affidavit can be obtained from the circuit clerk’s office Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
“If a person does not file the petition and affidavit by 5 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 20, he or she will not be considered in the election, and any votes cast for that person will not be counted,” Barnette said.
In other districts, Tim LeClair represents District One, the supervisor district of Michael Lott. LeClair was reelected by default in January 2010 to another five year term.
Dr. David Braswell, who represents District Two, the district of Chad Bridges, was elected to a second term in March 2011. His term expires March 2016.
James Hughes’s district represents District Four, which covers Supervisor Darrell Robinson. Hughes’s term expires March 2013.
Keith Watson represents District Five, Supervisor Chad Gray’s district. Watson’s term expires March 2014.
The school board meets the second Tuesday of every month at the central office downtown.
