Peggie Lamon Houston
Visitation for lifelong Grenada area resident, Peggie Lamon Houston, is at 10 a.m. at the Garner-Harper Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 21. A memorial service will follow in the Garner-Harper Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. with Pastor John Gray officiating. Burial will follow at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Water Valley.
Mrs. Houston was born Sept. 12, 1908, and passed from this life on July 19, at the Grenada Living Center. She was the fifth child born to the late Wallace and Alice (Evans) Lamon on the Gore Springs farm where her father, grandparents, great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents had lived and raised cotton since the late 1830’s. Her family was among the founding members of the Gore Springs Methodist Church and her uncle, Maston Lamon, was the first to be buried in the Gore Springs Cemetery.
Mrs. Houston moved to Grenada after her graduation from the Gore Springs School and became the wife of Frank White Houston. They were active in the Presbyterian Church and particularly enjoyed fishing at Grenada Lake. After Mr. Houston’s death, Peg continued to be active in the community, traveling and spending time with her family in Oklahoma. She talked fondly of the many changes she had seen in Grenada throughout her 100 plus years. She was an avid quilter and always enjoyed attending the quilt show at Gore Springs and visiting with long time friends and acquaintances.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her eight siblings: Jack, Hubert, Wilma, Evans, Pearl Neely, Edith Jarmon, Nannie Lou Halsell and James A.
Survivors include Lamon Halsell of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; Charles Wallace Jarmon of Knoxville, Tenn.; Bill and Lottie Moore of Peninsula, Ohio; Bill and Janet Smith and family of Wagoner, Okla., and other cousins and long time friends.
