County volunteer fire crews responded to a fire last night at the Georgia Pacific plant in Elliott. According to witnesses, the fire started a few minutes after 8 p.m. and crews from Elliott Volunteer Fire Department and Gore Springs Volunteer Fire Department were on scene within minutes. “It was a small fire at the back end of the plant that was contained within two hours,” said Melodie Ruse, senior communications manager for Georgia Pacific. She said no damages or injuries were reported. “Because we had limited staff on sight, fire crews had to be called in to help contain the fire,” Ruse said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Georgia Pacific was shut down Nov. 16 for six months because of market conditions. Minimal staff were on sight last night. Security at the plant entrance barred a GrenadaStar reporter from entering the area.
