Last season, the Grenada Lady Chargers were in an unfamiliar spot.
For the first time in several seasons, GHS found themselves sitting home in the postseason. Grenada had a 14-9 mark last season but struggled to score runs in a sport that you have to score to win games.
In the offseason, veteran coach Leslie Lancaster’s group became involved in a rigorous offseason strength and conditioning program run by Head Football Coach Ashley Kuhn. Lancaster hopes that improved strength helps her club put on more runs this season.
“The girls worked hard this summer getting stronger and in better shape,” Lancaster said. “Hopefully, we can move that on to the field and be a more productive offensive team this season. We have to do a better job scoring runs.”
Grenada will take to the field with just two seniors this season. Tara Grantham returns and will handle the pitching duties. The other senior Savanah Griffin, who will work in left field this fall.
GHS lost junior Emily Bush to an injury in the preseason. She might also be lost during the fast pitch season.
Mallory Harrison returns to Grenada after being at Kirk Academy for the past several seasons as a pitcher for the fast pitch team. She will be used in right field.
Nikki Woods, Alex Kelly, and Kaylee McKelroy, all juniors, are working at first base and catcher. Jordan Lea, another junior, is competing for time in the outfield.
Haley Armstrong, a sophomore, returns at second base. Laine Ward will be used in the outfield and as a pitcher. She is also a sophomore.
Laura Fields begins his sophomore season competing for the catcher spot. She was the catcher back in the spring in fast pitch.
Olivia Burns joins the team again. She had played just fast pitch until this season. During her sophomore campaign, she will work as a shortstop.
Kacey Carpenter, a freshman, returns at third base. Swayne Johnson, another freshman, works at second base.
Lainee McKelroy, an eighth grader, will work some at first base. Presley Rice, an eighth grader, returns from Kirk Academy. She works at shortstop.
Transfer Anna Francis Rogers competes for time at third base. She is just an eighth grader.
Madilyn Green, and eighth grader, works in the outfield along Gracie Gustafson, a seventh grader. Aikema Spencer is a seventh grader who works in the infield and outfield. Haley Shaw and Haley Ferguson, both seventh graders are outfielders.

Schedule
Grenada opens the season playing Eupora and East Webster in a tournament at Eupora. Following the tournament, they make the trek to Nettleton to play the Class 3A power Lady Tigers.
First home action will be in the Grenada Tournament Aug. 23. South Panola, Grenada, Independence, Coffeeville, Charleston, and Eupora will take part in the day-long event.
