It’s the first action against an opponent for the Grenada Chargers. For fourth-year head coach Ashley Kuhn it’s an opportunity to evaluate some personnel heading into the season opener at West Point.
Grenada will make the hour drive into the Delta to take on 4A power Cleveland. It will give the GHS an opportunity to line up against a team that made it to the Class 4A North Finals last season.
The Wildcats  are coached by former GHS assistant coach Kelly Causey.
“The biggest thing is that we get some game reps and condition against someone other than ourselves,” Kuhn said. “It will also be an evaluation period for a number of our players.”
Causey’s club finished 2013 with a 9-6 losing in the North 4A Finals to Lafayette. The Wildcats are led by Daughtne Dorsey (5-11, 195, sr.) gives Cleveland a threat that Grenada will look to contain.
“Cleveland is a very good team that returns a bunch of starters from last year’s north finals squad,” Kuhn said. “Their quarterback does an outstanding job of running their offense. They will challenge you on offense. It’s something that we won’t see all year. We are going to do what we do best.”
Grenada will relay on running backs D.D. Bridges and Kesner Spencer. Deon Knox and Caleb Morgan will split time at quarterback.
Action begins at 6 p.m. with the junior varsity teams playing. Following that, the varsity teams will play two 12-minute quarters. It will be just like a regular half of football.
This will be the final tune up for the Chargers before the season opener next week. Grenada will open the 2014 season Aug. 22 against 5A power West Point.
