The Grenada County Board of Supervisors on Thursday questioned the county’s garbage contractor and approved the Emergency Operations Center to apply for a grant.
Sammy Winder with Waste Pro was present to answer the supervisors’ concerns about service.
According to District Five Supervisor Chad Gray, on June 13, two county residents, on two separate occasions, witnessed a garbage truck pick up a can, drop it -- trash and all -- into the compactor, then drive away.
Another resident in his district hasn’t had a garbage can since the spring, Gray said.
An exasperated Gray said he’d made numerous calls, but wasn’t able to get the cans replaced.
“I’m just concerned and I’d like to offer these people an explanation,” said Gray. “We have an urgent need here. It’s very important to these people.”
Waste Pro recently purchased Waste Connections, which had Grenada’s contract since 2007. The company pays $9.95 per can to collect waste in both the city and county.
Winder said that the most effective way to get a can is to contact his office at (601) 981-9950. He promised to replace the cans in Gray’s district swiftly and to pay especially close attention to future concerns.
