On a hot afternoon last week at the Piney Woods archery shooting range, eight members of the 4-H Shooting Sports team gathered for a practice at the Grenada Bowhunters Range to practice prior to this week’s National Tournament in Grand Island, Neb.
Among those that were present was Grenadian Austin Carpenter and Beth Cline, who is the coach for the squad. Carpenter is the Mississippi champion in his 14-18 year old division and the third consecutive Grenadian to take part in the event.
“It’s a big deal for Grenada to be represented three years in a row at this event,” Cline said. “It’s says a lot about how good our shooting sports program has developed.”
The team will be in Nebraska today to begin practice for the event. Activities begin Wednesday with the opening ceremonies. Competition begins Thursday and runs through Saturday. Last year, a total of 35 states were represented with better than 500 competitors.
