As most of you read this, the countdown is at t-minus 40 days and counting.
The 40 is the number of days until some area schools begin their work toward the start of the 2014 football season. Private schools can start practice July 30 following by public schools Aug. 4. Both associations begin playing games Aug. 23.
Let’s take a spin around the area at schools and the outlook for the season.
The Chargers are coming off one of their most successful seasons in over a decade. Last season, GHS was 9-3 losing in the opening round of the Class 6A Playoffs. This season, GHS looks to find replacements for linebackers Shareef White (Memphis) and Genard Avery (Memphis). The Chargers also will be looking for a quarterback to replace Nate Evans (NW Community College).
The Raiders are coming off a tough 2-8 worksheet in 2013. Kirk second-year coach John McCrory put his troops through a rigorous offseason weight program. The veteran coach can see the difference.
“There’s no question that we will be stronger,” McCrory said. “Hopefully, we can take that to the field and make some improvement this season.”
Joey Tompkins moves over from J.Z. George after longtime coach Ken Chandler retired and moved down the road to Winona Christian.
