Active military personnel and veterans are encouraged to attend a special event in their honor Monday.
The City of Grenada will recognize service men and women with song and prayer at a Memorial Day service.
The event will be downtown, on the courthouse Square, starting at noon, and all military personnel are invited.
“We want to fill the Square with people, and we certainly want anybody who’s ever been affiliated with any branch of the service to participate,” said Mayor Billy Collins.
The service will begin with a march around the Square.
“I want to encourage military personnel to wear their uniforms, if they have them,” said Collins.
The march will be followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, the singing of the National Anthem and a scripture reading.
“We’ll also offer a prayer of thanksgiving and blessing for our service men and women,” said Collins.
The service, which should last just under 30 minutes, will close with the playing of the fight song from each branch of the military, as well as “Taps.”
“We owe a great deal to our military personnel, and I’d like to see this become an annual event,” said Collins.
