Brenda Holloway Allen
   Brenda Gail Holloway Allen, 61, of Big Creek, died Friday, May 2, 2014, at her residence. She was born on Dec. 11, 1952. in Calhoun City. She was the daughter of Joseph Winfred Holloway and Kathryn Melton Holloway.
   Mrs. Allen worked for the Grenada Public School District as a bus driver for 31 years. She loved being outside, gardening, fishing, antiquing and reading. Most of all, she loved her family. She was a member of Unity Baptist Church.
   Memorial service will be held Saturday, May 17, at 1 p.m., at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Big Creek.
   She is survived by her husband, Dennis Allen of Big Creek; one daughter, Jennifer (Trey) Sims of Brandon; one son, Michael (Alba) Green of Westminister, Mass.; one step-daughter, Beth (Heath) Bailey of Maben; one step-son, Lensy (Carla) Allen of Holcomb; two sisters, Barbara White of Big Creek and Becky Stam of Eustis, Fla.; two brothers, Larry (Gail) Holloway and David (Bonnie) Holloway of Hernando; 13 grandchildren, Chris, Allison, Brandon, Alayna, Maci Kathryn, Josh, Emily, Garet, Laken, Anna Kathryn, Libby, Will and Jacon; and a slew of nieces and nephews.
   She was preceded in death by her parents.
   In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Chapel Hill Cemetery Fund.

Ernestine Pendergrast James
   Ernestine Pendergrast James, 90, of Gore Springs, passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2014.
   She was born on Aug. 22, 1923, to Ernest and Lura Sprayberry Pendergrast.
   Ernestine was a member of The Memphis Doll Club, The Gore Springs Homemaker’s Club, The Iris Club, The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was formerly employed with Plough Incorporated in Memphis, Tenn., as a quality control inspector.
   She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Henry I. James Jr.; sisters, Mary Alice Yarbrough and Marion Brown; nephew, Terry James; and son-in-Law, Eddie Morton.
   Survivors include a son, James Ernest James of Birmingham, Ala.; two daughters, Charlotte Poliquin (David) of Calhoun City and Rose Marie Morton of Mobile, Ala.; nine grandchildren, including four granddaughters, Elizabeth (Wayne) Hester of Birmingham, Ala., Heidi (Eric) Fisher of New York, N.Y., Leigh Langdon of Birmingham, Sara (Tom) Snead of Auburn, Ala.; five grandsons, Vann (Sherrie) James of Birmingham, Ted (Jade-Lin) Morton of Tacoma, Wash., John Frank (Erin) Morton of Mobile, Todd (Julia) Allen of Batesville, Ark., and Jeff Allen of Houston, Texas; and 17 great-grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 10, at 2 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Gore Springs. Interment will follow at Bradford Chapel Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at Garner Harper Funeral Home in Grenada.
   Special Thanks to Sta-Home Health and Hospice for the loving care given to our mother, and to the friends and neighbors of our community and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church for emotional and spiritual support through our mother’s illness.

Ralph David Martin
   Ralph David Martin, 71, of Big Creek, was called home Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Grenada Lake Medical Center in Grenada.
   He was born on Oct. 7, 1942, in Yazoo City. He was son of William Reed Martin and Hattie Mae Mulvihill Martin. He was a member of Carrolton Baptist Church. He had served his country in the U.S. Air Force. During his early years, he worked at the BellSouth Telephone Company in Greenwood and he was a pilot. After moving to Big Creek in 1973, he was the co-owner of Martin’s Grocery. He was an avid, well-known fisherman that truly loved spending time on the lake and time with his family.
   Visitation will be Friday, May 9, 2014 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Pryor Funeral Home in Calhoun City. Funeral Service will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 10, at Pryor Funeral Home Chapel in Calhoun City with Bro. Mark Longino and Bro. John Hearn officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Nebo Cemetery in Big Creek. Pryor Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
   Pallbearers are Billy Martin, Ricky Martin, Bobby Martin, Bud Davis, David Poynor, Duane “Speck” Poynor, Michael Poynor, and Roger Poynor. Honorary Pallbearers are George Winters, Jason Martin, Popie Pope, Charles Liles, Justin Martin, Colton Martin, Chris Harcrow, Wesley Martin, Trey Moore, Joey Simmons, Larry Joe James, Troy Winters, and Mike Mize.
   He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Jamie Sue Poynor Martin; his daughter, Liz (Gene) Alexander; his son, Mark (Cheryl) Martin, all of Big Creek. He is also survived by four granddaughters that he dearly loved and devoted his life to, Jeri-Laken Alexander (Kipper) Greer, Brittany Martin (Cody) Greer, Jayla Alexander  (Justin) Greer, and Madysen Martin. He was blessed with great-grands, Alayna Murphree, Jersi Greer, and Jacob Greer. He was looking forward to the fourth one, Jaystin Greer. He is also survived by his sisters, Carolyn Jones of Big Creek, Barbara (Bob) Mastellar of Lake Washington, Miss., and Francis Davis of Greenwood; his brother, Raymond (Ruth) Martin of  San Diego, Calif.; sister-in-law, Minnie (George) Winters, brothers-in-law, David (Lisa) Poynor of Big Creek; Speck Poynor of Union, Miss.; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
   He was preceded in death by his parents, William Reed Martin and Mae Mulvihill Martin; sister, Margaret Nichols, brothers, Robert Martin, Billy Martin, and Paul Martin.
