Grenada’s new director of parks and recreation says he has big plans for children in the Lake City.
A fine arts program, including theater, and more emphasis on soccer are just some of the innovations the Rev. Larry Young wants to bring to the department.
Young, 55, was appointed director Monday by City Manager Charles “Jo Jo” Weathers.
He’ll oversee the work of five employees and a yearly budget of around $450,000.
Young, pastor of Straight Gate Church of Jesus Christ, replaces John Body, who served in an interim role for two months after the retirement of long-time director Robert Ellis.
Young began working with the Grenada Youth Baseball League in 1979 under the direction of Clarence Spencer.
“I credit a lot of my success to the years he (Spencer) was a mentor to me,” said Young.
Young also received guidance from Coach Wayne Carson but the person he most credits with shaping his character and vision is his mother,  the late Beulah Lott, a long-time employee of Long’s Flower Shop.
“I give her the credit for my communication skills,” said Young.
