The Grenada Lady Chargers didn’t make the postseason a year ago after losing out in the opening round in 2012 to eventual 6A Champion Madison Central.
Late last week, Coach Leslie Lancaster’s crew needed a win at Tupelo to secure one of three spots from Region 2-6A. GHS won the earlier matchup at Grenada by a 1-0 count.
The story of the earlier game was the pitching of freshman Olivia Burns. She was solid again allowing just two hits. The offense took center stage pounding out 13 hits en route to a 7-2 win.
With the victory, GHS improves to 7-5-1 overall. The Lady Chargers are 2-1 inside the region. The win assures GHS of at least third place.
“We were really good on the offensive end this time around,” Lancaster said. “It was one of our better days at the plate in sometime. Hopefully, we can build on that performance.”
Burns was her steady self. She allowed the two hits while walking just four and striking out three. Defensively, Grenada worked its way around four errors afield.
“Olivia was solid again for us,” Lancaster said. “She stayed ahead in counts for the most part.”
Grenada got on the board in the top of the first with a run. After one out, Laine Ward singled. Burns reached on an error putting runners on first and second.
Emily Bush plated Burns with a single with two outs to make it 1-0.
Tupelo came back in the home half of the first inning scoring a pair of runs. The Lady Wave took advantage of a couple of Grenada errors and a walk.
The Lady Chargers tied the game with a run in the third inning.
Armstrong reached on an error to start the inning. She would later move to second and to third on Ward’s ground out to first.
The game-tying run came home on a single from Carpenter.
GHS took the lead for good in the fourth inning with a run. Nikki Woods singled to start the inning and moved to second on Macey McDaniel’s sacrifice bunt.
Woods advanced to third during Jordan Lea’s at bat. She would score on Lea’s sacrifice bunt, making it 3-2.
In the fifth, GHS broke the game open with three runs on three hits. After one out, Ward reached on an error. She would later move to second base.
Burns reached base on an error that sent Ward to third. Burns moved to second on a stolen base. Carpenter singled in a run and moved Burns to third base. Wood drove home two runs on a single to make it 6-2.
Grenada closed out the scoring with a run on three hits in the seventh inning. Burns started the inning with a double. Woods plated the final run with a sacrifice fly.

Junior varsity
Grenada pounded out eight hits in a 9-1 three-inning win in the junior varsity contest.
In the first inning, Emily Staten walked after one out. Alex Kelly followed with a walk. Jenna Coker drove home a run with a single. Lainee McKelroy plated a run with a ground out.
The Lady Chargers scored two in the second inning. After one out, Stephanie Davis reached on an error and ended up on second base. Swayze Johnson doubled in a run and would score the second run in the frame to make it 4-1.
Grenada closed the scoring with five runs in the third inning. Coker singled to open the frame. After a ground out, Lainee McKelroy doubled. Anna Kuhn singled in a run followed by a two-run single from Davis. Johnson and Amber Guinn closed the inning with a run-scoring single.
Coker earned the win for Grenada.
Grenada was scheduled to go to South Panola Monday, weather permitting. If not, the game will be played today in Batesville.
Tuesday’s Hernando home game, which will be Senior Night, would then be switched to Thursday. Gametime is 4:30 p.m.
