Grenada’s new acting director of Parks and Recreation said promoting robust, diverse participation in the recreational activities offered by the city is his goal while he’s in office.
“I think we have to have kids in mind, first and foremost,” said John Body, 47, who was appointed to the position three weeks ago by Interim City Manager Charles “Jo Jo” Weathers.
Body has worked for the city since 2003. He replaces Richard Ellis who announced his retirement last month.
Weathers said he is searching for a new, permanent director of Parks and Recreation, and has 12 resumes.
“Most applicants are from Mississippi,” said Weathers. “One is from Alabama.”
He didn’t have any preference about hiring in-state or out of state, Weathers said.
The new director will be in charge of a budget of more than $400,000, according to Grenada Financial Director Carl Bevell.
“The most important thing is to choose someone who is passionate about the job,” said Weathers. “These are our kids we’re talking about.”
Weathers hopes to hire someone in the permanent position by late spring, he said.
