Motels and hotels in Grenada will soon have an official association to represent them at Tourism Commission meetings.
The Grenada Hotel and Motel Association has not existed for some time, even though a Tourism Board member speaks for their interests at meetings.
According to Tourism Commission Member Cheryl Stevens, who represents the voice of hotels and motels on the commission, she has made phone calls, solicited participation and drummed up interest in the association, and a meeting is set for March 17 at noon at the Grenada Area Chamber of Commerce.
Participation is free and all are invited.
“I think this is something that’s needed,” said Stevens who, as general manager at the Hampton Inn and Suites, was chosen to represent hotels and motels last year. Because there was no Hotel and Motel Association to elect her, Stevens gathered signatures from hoteliers to serve as a kind of resume.
The Tourism Commission tried last fall to create a buzz and get hotel and motel representatives to form an association, but it didn’t work out, Stevens said.
“We didn’t get the kind of response we were hoping for,” said Stevens. She said that recent buzz around Tourism Commission meetings and the formation of a Grenada Restaurant Association has piqued hoteliers interest.
