Social and cyberbullying has to stop, especially among young girls.
That’s the message a Grenada man recently delivered to some 20,000 teenagers in San Antiono as part of his ongoing mission to continue his daughter’s legacy.
Sgt. 1st Class Robert Britt’s daughter, Sara, committed suicide when she was 15. Since her death Britt has made it his goal to help other teenagers and military families avoid the agony he suffered.
The 501c3 that Britt started is called Sara’s Smile, and he recently spoke in conjunction with the Teen Nation Tour.
“Talking about suicide and bullying is so important, and I’m trying to encourage people to have these hard conversations, to speak up, to ask for help and to offer help,” said Britt, who also works as a recruiter for the Army National Guard.
Sara was bullied over the internet, or cyberbullied, in the last days of her life, Britt said.
During the tour he also spoke about teenagers harming themselves, including the self-mutilation tactic of cutting, Britt said.
Britt will soon speak to a Navy JAG conference, or Judge Advocate Generals, in Biloxi, as well as to a military unit in Hattiesburg.
“I should mention that young pop singer Branden Mendoza, who performed at a few Sara’s Smile events last year in this area, and who is a friend of the organization, will be a contestant on the upcoming season of NBC’s talent show, The Voice,” said Britt.
He’ll never fully get over his girl’s suicide, Britt said, but working to help others in her name certainly helps.
“Talk to a counselor or a teacher,” said Britt. “Get that help you need.”
“The more people I can get in front of, to get my daughter’s story out there, the better I feel and the more potential good we can do,” said Britt.
