America has strayed from its roots in rugged individualism and has gravitated toward bigger, more intrusive government, according to a political candidate who addressed the Grenada Lions’ Club on Wednesday.
Mississippi State Sen. Chris McDaniel is challenging U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran for his seat, and he thinks that the long-time Republican congressman has strayed from conservative values.
“The lamps of liberty are going out,” said McDaniel, who represents the 42nd District, which encompasses part of southern Mississippi.
Cochran is expected to announce soon whether he’ll seek a seventh six-year term. He was first elected in 1978. McDaniel recently announced that he would challenge Cochran in the 2014 Republican primary.
